Managerial shake-up in England: Liverpool sacks Slot

Liverpool FC have surprisingly parted ways with manager Arne Slot. The Reds announced that the Dutchman has been dismissed with immediate effect.

Slot had a contract until the summer of 2027. The 47-year-old had been Liverpool's coach since 2024, succeeding Jürgen Klopp, and had won the league title in his first season. Last season, the storied club finished only fifth in the Premier League – a disappointing result given Liverpool's ambitions.

Andoni Iraola is already being touted in the English media as a possible successor, which could also involve Bayer Leverkusen. The 43-year-old Spaniard spent three years as manager of AFC Bournemouth and is also considered a candidate for the Bundesliga club.

Lots of praise, but few explanations from the Reds.

"It goes without saying that this was a difficult decision for us as a club," the Reds said in a statement at midday, praising Slot for his contributions. Initially, there was little information about the reasons for his dismissal. "At the same time, we jointly came to the conclusion that changes are necessary for the club to move forward," was all that was stated. "However, the conclusion we reached is based on the conviction that the team's development can best be managed through a change of direction."

The end of the season was particularly disappointing. Liverpool only managed three wins in their last ten competitive matches. On the final matchday, they only managed a disappointing 1-1 draw against Brentford, and their last victory came at the end of April against Crystal Palace (3-1).
