Violence and pyrotechnics: 35 arrests after cup final in Paris

Around 35 people were arrested in connection with the French Cup final in Paris on Friday. 26 were taken into custody, police announced after RC Lens' 3-1 victory over OGC Nice.

The main offenses involved possession of fireworks, prohibited weapons, violence, and insulting officials. Four officers sustained minor injuries.


According to media reports, a massive brawl broke out the evening before the match between hooligans, including some from Nice, and Paris Saint-Germain fans. One man was admitted to intensive care with severe head injuries. Around 100 Nice fans had gathered near the Canal Saint-Martin, a popular tourist destination. Police stated that further disturbances in other areas were prevented.

Extensive security measures were in place for the final, classified as a high-risk match, at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis near Paris. According to police, an adapted security concept was implemented "throughout the greater Paris area." More than 2.000 police officers were reportedly deployed. Lens celebrated their first victory in the French Cup.
