Antoine Griezmann is moving to MLS

Star striker Antoine Griezmann will move from Atlético Madrid to the North American professional league MLS next July. The 2018 French World Cup winner will play for Orlando City SC, as announced by his future team.

The 35-year-old attacking midfielder signed a contract until 2028 with an option for a further year. Atlético Madrid, where Griezmann has played since 2014 with a two-year break, confirmed the transfer. Griezmann is the all-time leading scorer for the Spanish capital club with 211 goals. He has made 488 appearances for Los Rojiblancos so far; only three players have more club appearances. In Spain, Griezmann also played for FC Barcelona and Real Sociedad.

“I’m really looking forward to starting this new chapter of my career at Orlando City,” Griezmann said in a statement released by his new team. “Even in my initial discussions with the club, I sensed a strong ambition and a clear vision for the future, and that really appealed to me.”

Coaching change after a poor start

Orlando could certainly use some reinforcements. They've lost four of their first five games this season and currently sit third from last in the standings. Just over two weeks ago, head coach Óscar Pareja was dismissed due to the poor start to the season, with assistant coach Martín Perelman taking over on an interim basis. Despite this, they still suffered a 0-5 defeat against Nashville SC last weekend.
