Group victory: Sweden clearly beats Germany

Sweden has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women's European Football Championship as winners of Group C. The Scandinavians defeated Germany 4-1 in Zurich on Saturday; both teams had already qualified.

In the second group match, Poland celebrated a 3-2 victory against Denmark in a duel between previously pointless teams and thus left the tournament as third in the pool.

The Germans started strongly at the Letzigrund Stadium, taking an early lead after a spectacular attack by Jule Brand (7'). The Swedes equalized with their first significant move, but Stina Blackstenius was badly neglected by the German defense (12'). Germany kept up the pressure, but the Swedes scored again, this time somewhat fortunately through a press shot by Smilla Holmberg (25').

Preliminary decision after red for Wamser

The early decision came just over half an hour later. Carlotta Wamser deliberately blocked a shot by Fridolina Rolfö on the goal line with her hand and was shown a red card, and Rolfö confidently converted the resulting penalty (34'). The previously fast-paced game lost a significant amount of momentum after the suspension – Germany, down 80 men, could no longer enforce their lead, while Sweden had no problem maintaining their lead and secured the final goal through Lina Hurtig (XNUMX').

The Scandinavians, who won all three group matches, will face the runner-up from Pool D in the quarterfinals on Thursday. All four teams, France, England, the Netherlands, and Wales, are still in contention. After their first defeat following two previous victories, the Germans will face the winner of this group next Saturday, which will be decided on Sunday.

The Poles had an honorable farewell, winning against Denmark after goals from Natalia Padilla-Bidas (13th), Ewa Pajor (20th) and Martyna Wiankowska (76th) as well as Janni Thomson (59th) and Signe Bruun (83rd).
