Switzerland too expensive? England star makes people sit up and take notice

The Women's European Football Championship will take place in Switzerland between July 2 and 27. However, the tournament is also a question of price, as a star player from England has now pointed out. In order for family and friends to be there, some have to dig into their own pockets.

Switzerland generally has a reputation for being a country with a somewhat higher standard of living. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this is true: According to the Federal Statistical Office, the gross national income per capita in Italy was approximately €2023 in 32.000, compared to just under €80.000 in Switzerland. However, the cost of living in the Alpine country is significantly higher than in neighboring countries, in some cases even over 60 percent.

At the Women's European Championship in Switzerland, the focus is naturally on accommodation, food, public viewing – the fans who have traveled there naturally want to have a good time during the European Championship. But the costs are a topic of conversation, even among the players. "The cost of living in Switzerland is extremely high," Georgia Stanway was told by the Swiss View England's star player then admitted that even for her, it wasn't an easy undertaking in Switzerland. "That makes it difficult for us too. Many of us are digging into our own pockets so our families can come to the tournament."

Association supports players

At least the players receive financial support from their association. At least to a certain extent. "In an ideal world, everyone could have their family at every game. I don't know if it's enough," said England boss Mark Bullingham. "But we're making a significant contribution to making it possible."

To get an idea of the costs: In the Fan Zone in Zurich, some prices caused a stir among football fans. For example, a glass of wine (0,2 liters) costs an average of around 17 euros, while a beer (0,4 liters) costs 7 euros. Media spokesperson Dorian Eichholzer presented the prices in an interview with 20 Minutes in relation. "The prices in the ZüriFanzone are in line with comparable events and restaurants in Zurich," he emphasized. "By the way, there are water stations with free drinking water on site." Nevertheless, the prices remain high – and apparently even the players are struggling with them.
