World Cup Qualifiers: The Azzurre must go to the playoffs

The Women's World Cup is scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2027. Italy still has to fight for a place.

The World Cup qualifiers concluded on Tuesday. In Group 1, which also included Italy, Denmark secured first place and thus the only direct qualification spot for the World Cup finals. The Azzurre drew 2-2 against Sweden in their final match, finishing second in the qualifying group. This means that Arianna Caruso and her teammates will have to compete in the playoffs starting this fall. Two rounds separate the Azzurre from the World Cup; their opponents are yet to be drawn.

On Tuesday in Gothenburg, Italy led 2-0 but ultimately had to settle for a 2-2 draw. Eva Schatzer from Vahrn is currently part of Italy's squad but was not selected for the match against Sweden.
