Violent riots overshadow the Genoa derby

The third round of the Italian Cup had a very special highlight in store: Genoa met city rivals Sampdoria. The match was spectacular, but riots overshadowed the derby.

Genoa against Sampdoria – this is one of the hottest derbies in Italy. The city rivals do not meet in the league (Genoa plays in Serie A, Sampdoria in Serie B), but they did meet in the Italian Cup.

In the end, Sampdoria caused a surprise: FCS' opponents won 6:5 on penalties. After 90 minutes, the score was 1:1, with Genoa taking the lead early on with Andrea Pinamonti from Nonsberg (9th minute). Shortly before the end, Fabio Borini equalized (83rd minute), saving Sampdoria from having to go to the penalty shootout.

The derby was overshadowed by violent riots between the two rival fan groups. Throughout the day, there were riots reminiscent of guerrilla scenes on the streets of Genoa, especially in front of the Marassi Stadium. Three police officers were injured. Sampdoria will face Roma in the round of 1. Cesena (0-3 against Pisa) and Udinese (1-XNUMX against Salernitana) have also advanced to the next round.
