It was still stoppage time when the Allianz Stadium in Turin became increasingly empty, a considerable portion of the remaining fans loudly expressed their frustration after the final whistle and booed the black and white protagonists on the pitch: On the 26th matchday of Serie A, Juventus had to admit defeat at home against Como with a 0:2 (0:1) defeat after an unimaginative performance.
This completed a disastrous week: Last Saturday, they suffered a painful 2-3 defeat against Inter in the Derby d'Italia, and three days later, the Bianconeri were thrashed 2-5 by Galatasaray in the first leg of their Champions League playoff. Now comes another blow in the league: For the first time in 75 years, Juve lost at home to Como and are in danger of falling behind in the race for Champions League qualification.
A mistake in the build-up play leads to defeat.
A defensive error by Weston McKennie in the eleventh minute led to the opening goal. Como quickly countered, and from a slightly obscured position, Mergim Vojvoda simply fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the net. While the home side enjoyed significantly more possession for a period, they failed to create any meaningful chances. Instead, the offensively superior Como came close to adding a second goal.Juventus were completely unimaginative against Como. © ANSA / Alessandro Di Marco
This goal came in the second half: Lucas da Cunha broke through after a through ball and squared it across the face of goal for Maxence Caqueret, who calmly slotted it into the empty net for 2-0 (61'). This was the price paid for a completely uninspired Juventus, who at least threatened with a dangerous free kick from Teun Koopmeiners. The Dutchman hit the right post in the 84th minute.
Juventus is in danger of slipping down the ladder.
The result remained unchanged. Juventus thus has 46 points after 26 games and sits in fifth place. Como, now in sixth, is just one point behind the Turin side. Roma (4th/47 points) could temporarily pull away in the race for Champions League qualification with a win against Cremonese (Sunday, 8:45 pm), while Atalanta (7th/42 points) would overtake Juve with a victory against Napoli (Sunday, 3:00 pm). For the Old Lady, Wednesday's match at home against Galatasaray (9:00 pm) is crucial for staying in the Champions League. They will be looking to secure their first win after five winless competitive matches.Inter are redeemed late in the game.
In the evening match, league leaders Inter faced Lecce away – and struggled for a long time against the relegation-threatened side. Henrikh Mkhitaryan finally broke the deadlock for the Nerazzurri in the 75th minute, making it 1-0, and shortly before the final whistle, defender Manuel Akanji sealed the victory with a header (82nd minute). With this 2-0 win, Inter temporarily extended their lead at the top of the table, but city rivals Milan could close the gap to seven points again on Sunday evening. For that to happen, however, they need a win against Parma (6:00 PM).Serie A, 26th matchday – the results
