Against Genoa: Inter Milan remain on course for the title

One week before the "Derby della Madonnina," Inter further extended their lead at the top of Serie A. Milan have the chance to catch up on Sunday.

Inter remain at the top – at least in Serie A. Four days after their Champions League exit against Bodø/Glimt, Genoa visited Inter at the San Siro. The Ligurian side, managed by Roma legend Daniele De Rossi, put in a decent performance but still suffered a 0-2 defeat.

From the outset, the hosts enjoyed more possession but initially struggled to break down Genoa's defensive wall. The visitors defended intelligently, effectively blocking almost every avenue to goal. A murmur of excitement rippled through the stadium in the 27th minute when Henrikh Mkhitaryan's long-range effort was deflected by Johan Vasquez, only to crash against the crossbar. Shortly afterward, Genoa goalkeeper Justin Bijlow made a brilliant save against Ange-Yoan Bonny (29th minute).

“Derby della Madonnina” is coming up

As the hosts began to despair, Federico Dimarco took matters into his own hands and gave Inter a spectacular lead: Mkhitaryan played the ball through to the left winger, Dimarco volleyed it into the far corner from a tight angle – a sight to behold (31'). The second half was considerably less fast-paced, and a converted penalty by Hakan Calhanoglu – after a handball by Amorim – sealed the 2-0 victory.
