Heart problems: Napoli star McTominay undergoes surgery

Scott McTominay of the Italian first division club Napoli has undergone successful surgery for a heart rhythm disorder.

The club announced that the 29-year-old Scottish international had undergone a necessary procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital in Great Britain as planned. The statement added that the procedure was "completely successful".

McTominay will now take a two-week break to recover before returning to training. The Italian champion of the 2024/2025 season spoke earlier this month of an expected recovery time of approximately one month.

The midfielder had to undergo a corrective procedure called prophylactic fecal arrhythmia (PFA) due to a "mild, benign cardiac arrhythmia," the club explained in a brief statement at the time. This minimally invasive procedure selectively destroys tissue in the heart that is responsible for the development of cardiac arrhythmias.

McTominay has been under contract with Napoli since the summer of 2024. He previously played for Manchester United for seven years. He helped his current club win the Italian championship. At this year's World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, McTominay and Scotland were eliminated in the group stage.
