The superiority of the guests from Milan was evident early in the match, but Inter were unable to score in the first half. Whether Henrikh Mkhitaryan (14th), Lautaro Martínez (28th) or Nicolò Barella (42nd) – the 20-time champions missed even promising chances. However, Cagliari did not punish this carelessness. The home team only managed to make small pinpricks against their overwhelming opponents.
The deadlock finally burst in the second half. Barella, who had previously failed to score himself, set up the goals for Alessandro Bastoni (53') and Martínez (71'). Hakan Calhanoglu scored the final goal from the penalty spot just a short time later, after Mateusz Wieteska had conceded a handball penalty (3').
Inter celebrated their fifth league victory in a row, but they were only able to reach the top of the table for a few hours. Late in the evening, Atalanta moved back ahead of the Nerazzurri with a late 1:1 draw against Lazio.
