Grabara suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during training and is expected to be out for six to seven months.
The 27-year-old, who was loaned from VfL Wolfsburg in the summer as the number two behind Guglielmo Vicario, only recently made his debut for Juventus. In the Europa League against NEC Nijmegen ( 5:0Grabara made his first appearance in goal and even managed an assist. Now comes another serious setback. According to the club, further examinations in the coming days will determine the exact course of action. Surgery is imminent.
Juventus are suffering from a huge injury crisis
For Juventus, the injury is the latest setback in an already difficult period. Grabara is the fourth player in less than three weeks to require surgery. Previously, Kenan Yildiz, Khephren Thuram, and Manuel Locatelli were among those affected.Kenan Yildiz (right) will be out for a long time at Juventus. © APA/afp / ISABELLA BONOTTO
Yildiz is expected to be out for three months with an injury to the fifth metatarsal bone of his left foot. Thuram will be sidelined for approximately four months due to cartilage damage in his right knee. Captain Locatelli is expected to be out for five to six months following a lateral meniscus injury.
Juve needs to get inventive.
Juventus will have to improvise in goal behind first-choice keeper Vicario. Alongside established goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio, the young Radu from the club's own Next Gen academy is expected to join the first-team squad. At the same time, the club is apparently exploring other options.Goalkeepers currently without a club could also play a role. According to Italian media reports, Neto and Sergio Rico, among others, have offered their services to Juventus. Neto is already familiar with the club from his first stint in Turin, when he made a total of 22 competitive appearances for the Bianconeri between 2015 and 2017. Sergio Rico has previously played for Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain, among others.
Juventus will likely be looking for a goalkeeper again in the transfer market no later than January. However, given Grabara's long-term injury, the club could try to fill the gap between the posts even sooner.
