Last minute win for Bologna at Empoli

The 29th Serie A matchday opened on Friday evening with the duel between relegation candidates Empoli and high-flyers Bologna. The guests dominated the game, but only turned to winning ways very late.

Empoli and Bologna met on Friday. In pouring rain and difficult conditions, the guests secured a very late 1-0 win, but it was well deserved.

Empoli is currently in 17th place and therefore not in a direct relegation place, but the Tuscans are still in the middle of a relegation battle. The last two games were lost, but before that there was a positive series with 12 points from six games. Friday's opponent, Bologna, was the high flyer of this Serie A season. They are in fourth place in the league and therefore have a place in the Champions League. In general, things are going brilliantly for Thiago Motta's team so far.

Bologna presses, Empoli counters

Bologna started the game very well and pinned the home team at the back. However, chances to score were initially in short supply. But when Bologna did become dangerous, it was always in standard situations. The biggest opportunity - contrary to the course of the game - was found by Empoli striker Niang, but he waited too long in front of Skorupski and was decisively disrupted by a Bologna defender. With the score 0-0 we went into the dressing rooms.

In the second half the game dragged on for quite a while and there were no compelling chances to score. It wasn't until the final quarter of an hour that Bologna suddenly put the pedal to the metal and pushed wildly for the opening goal.

Furious final phase

First it was ex-Milan player Alexis Sealemaekers, who was left alone in front of Empoli keeper Elia Caprile (81'). Then the huge chance for Bologna: Kristiansen broke through on the left and crossed low into the middle, where Orsolini only had the half-empty goal in front of him, but instead the ball hit the sky (86th).

Empoli withstood the pressure well, but in the end the high-flyers still managed to score the winning goal. A failed attempt to clear the ball by the Empoli defense came to Calafiori, who tried from a long distance. Caprile let the shot clumsily flick forward, right onto the foot of substitute Giovanni Fabbian, who didn't need to be asked twice and scored 1-0 for Bologna and right into the heart of Empoli (90th + 4).

Top game on Sunday

The absolute top game of the 29th round takes place on Sunday evening from 20.45 p.m. when Inter and Napoli meet at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Although the home side are in first place and the Campanians are only in seventh place, the situation for the Neapolitans has calmed down somewhat since the change of coach. The big favorite is nevertheless Inter, who have not had to accept a league defeat this season.
