Lazio bends the reigning champions

Napoli and Lazio met on Saturday evening. The capital city team managed a somewhat surprising victory against last season's champions.

On Saturday evening, the reigning Scudetto winners Napoli were really challenged for the first time in Serie A. Another top league player, Lazio, was a guest at the “Stadio Diego Armando Maradona”. Admittedly, the club from the capital has lagged well behind the other big names in Italian football this season. Defeats against Genoa (0:1) and Lecce (1:2) mean zero points in the table before the meeting with the southern Italians. One might think that new coach Rudi Garcia's players have found a treat. Ultimately, however, there was a surprise as Lazio defeated Napoli 2-1. This also meant that Milan remained alone at the top of the table.

Although the home team took control of the game as usual at the beginning, Lazio scored the first goal. The Napoli defense failed to get the ball out of its own danger zone and defuse a dangerous situation. So it was Luis Alberto who picked up the abandoned piece of equipment and slammed it into the net to make it 1-0 (30th). Frustrated faces could be seen on Napoli's players. But they were only allowed to smile again a little later. A shot from Piotr Zielinski found its way into the goal via a detour from a Lazio leg to quickly equalize 1-1 (32').

Shortly after half-time, it was Daichi Kamada who put worry lines on Napoli's face again. He cleverly received a ball in the penalty area and sank it into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1 for Lazio (52'). This had tasted blood and a little later scored two more goals within five minutes, both of which were disallowed by the VAR referee. Only Giacomo Raspadori had a chance to equalize for Napoli in stoppage time, but he shot over the goal. Otherwise, the capital club was able to celebrate the well-deserved first three points of the season, while Osimhen and Co. will be somewhat annoyed by their performance today.
