Simone Zanon has experienced a meteoric rise. Five years ago, the right-back from Sinich was deemed not good enough for a professional contract at FC Südtirol. Now, the 24-year-old is on the verge of his first stint in the Italian top flight, having developed into one of the best players in his position in Serie B.

Zanon entered professional football via Serie D. He most recently played for three years in Carrara, helping the Tuscan club achieve promotion to Serie B. The South Tyrolean needed no time to settle into Italy's second division. In 70 appearances, he scored five goals and provided eleven assists – an exceptional tally for a wing-back. Last season, Zanon amassed eleven scorer points (four goals, seven assists), attracting the attention of Serie A clubs.

Off to the island

A transfer to Lecce fell through in the winter due to bureaucratic hurdles. Now, however, a move to Serie A is expected to go through. Cagliari appears to have won the race for the South Tyrolean. The Sardinian club is reportedly set to pay around two million euros to Carrara. On the island, Zanon is expected to replace rising star Marco Palestra, who moved to Chelsea after his loan spell at Atalanta ended.

Zanon is still in Kaltern, where the final details of the transfer are being sorted out. Carrarese will remain in a training camp in South Tyrol until Sunday, before concluding their camp with a friendly match against Napoli in Dimaro (Trentino).
