Back in Serie A: Top club signs Gattuso

Gennaro Gattuso has found a new employer: After leaving the Italian national team, the 2006 World Cup winner is joining Serie A again.

Former Italian national team coach Gennaro Gattuso has taken over as manager of Italian Serie A club Lazio Rome. The 48-year-old signed with the capital club, as announced by the club. The move comes just a few months after his departure from the national team following Italy's second consecutive World Cup exit.

"Lazio warmly welcomes the new coach and is convinced that his experience, professionalism and determination will help the club achieve its sporting goals," the press release stated.

Gattuso apparently has a contract until 2028

According to Italian media reports, Gattuso signed a contract until 2028, with a net salary of nearly €1,5 million per year. Lazio is certainly taking a risk with the former midfield star: he has never spent two full years on a coaching bench, having instead worked at eleven different clubs since June 2013. Among others, Gattuso coached Palermo, Milan, Napoli, Valencia, and Marseille. His last job, however, remains in the memory of all of Italy.

Gattuso had been in charge of the Squadra Azzurra until the beginning of April, but had to vacate his post after Italy's latest failure to qualify for the World Cup in March, following their defeat against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Along with Gattuso, football federation president Gabriele Gravina and former goalkeeping legend Gianluigi Buffon, who served as team coordinator, also had to leave.
