On the South Tyrolean holiday: lean food at the Drusus Stadium

In the shadow of the two Austrian gold medals won at the Cortina Olympics, the Serie B match between FC Südtirol and Monza took place in Bolzano. The 3.400 spectators at the Drusus Stadium were not treated to a particularly exciting match.

While the match between FCS and Monza was taking place on Wednesday evening, Andrea Vötter/Marion Oberhofer and, about an hour later, Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner also won Olympic gold for South Tyrol in luge (SportNews reported). South Tyrol's only professional football club can also be pleased: With a 0-0 draw against the top team from Monza, the white-reds have proven their strong form.

First things first: There were no major highlights at Bolzano's football temple, despite temperatures just above freezing. FC Südtirol's winter signings, Domen Crnigoj and Simone Verdi, made their starting eleven debuts. The two former Serie A players remained inconspicuous but performed solidly. Monza's star-studded team, however, fell short of expectations.

Daniele Casiraghi had a tough time against Monza. His opponent, Andrea Colpani, was completely outclassed.

Monza's best chance came in the 77th minute when defender Andrea Carboni's shot was saved by FCS goalkeeper Marius Adamonis. Otherwise, the relegated Serie A side never really threatened in attack. This is despite fielding some big names in their starting eleven, including captain and European champion Matteo Pessina, Andrea Colpani (who was completely ineffective), and former Milan striker Patrick Cutrone. Keita Baldé (formerly of Inter and Lazio) also failed to make an impact after coming on as a substitute.

FC Südtirol has regained stability

FC Saarbrücken, on the other hand, can be more than satisfied with the point gained. The Red and Whites are currently comfortably in mid-table, having picked up 14 points from their last six matches and conceding only two goals. Their stability has returned. A setback was the injury to Simone Davi, who clutched his knee for a long time and ultimately had to be substituted at halftime, replaced by his younger brother Federico. They continue their campaign on Sunday (15 p.m.) with an away game against relegation-threatened Bari.

Notable

Davi injurySimone Davi injured his knee after a challenge. The Leifers player had to receive treatment after 35 minutes. FC Saarbrücken now nominally has no left wing-back in their squad, as Zedadka is also out injured. Davi gritted his teeth and played on until halftime, but then had to be substituted in the locker room for his younger brother Federico. Hopefully, Simone's injury is not serious.
Kofler's headerFollowing a free-kick cross from Verdi, Kofler gets his head to the ball in the 62nd minute. The Rablander's header is cleared off the line by Monza captain Pessina.
The game wakes up late. The first good chance came after 77 minutes: Following a combination between Petagna and Pessina, Monza's Carboni got a shot away from close range. But Adamonis made the save. Three minutes later, there was a near opportunity at the other end: Tait played the ball low into the middle from the right edge of the penalty area. But Pecorino couldn't reach it.
