FC Südtirol scores with the surprise team

FC Südtirol can live with that: The White-Reds got a point at Catanzaro on Saturday. The newcomer from Calabria was the better team.

FC Südtirol is still holding off the playout places: Federico Valente's team fought to a 2-2 draw in Catanzaro. This means the lead over 16th place is still 3 points. The FCS's draw was not undeserved, but the home team was without a doubt the better team.

FCS coach Valente put star newcomer Jasmin Kurtic in the starting line-up for the first time. The Slovenian, like Salvatore Molina, played for the first time from the start. Kurtic thanked his coach and gave FC Südtirol the lead in Catanzaro with a header after just over a minute. A dream start, so to speak. But the home team got their deserved equalizer during the break.

Pecorino saves the FCS

Valente had to restructure his defense before the game because Andrea Masiello and Andrea Giorgini were suspended. Raphael Kofler and Andrea Cagnano moved into the back three for them. They did their job properly. But above all, Catanzaro was superior in terms of play. The newcomer, who is in a playoff spot, has been shining with refreshing offensive football all season long. At the beginning of the second half, Catanzaro should have increased the score to 3-1 through striker Iemello. In return, FCS striker Emanuele Pecorino made it 2-2 with a fine individual performance. In the end it stayed that way.

Pecorino probably played his best game since joining FC Südtirol on Saturday. In this form, the 22-year-old center forward is a real asset for the team. The FCS continues next Saturday with a home game against Bari.

The highlights

Dream start After just 62 seconds of play, the FCS takes the lead. A corner from Casiraghi lands at Kurtic. The Slovenian heads in early to make it 1-0.
Deserved compensationAfter about half an hour, Catanzaro earned the equalizer. The Calabrese now have more opportunities. A shot from ex-FCS man Pompetti is blocked. The rebound lands right at Brighenti's feet. The defender stays cool from a few meters and scores to equalize.
Game turnedThe home team turned the game around immediately after the break. A corner from ex-FCS player Pompetti lands at the far post right on the head of Antonini, who heads it in to make it 2-1 for Catanzaro.
PecorinoAs if out of nowhere, the FCS equalized after just under an hour. Pecorino dances past half of the back line and scores in true striker fashion to make it 2-2. What a goal.
