FCS debut in Serie B: Strong performance, but no reward

The signs were anything but easy for FC Südtirol: coach Lamberto Zauli was shown the door before the first game. Under the direction of interim coach Leandro Greco, the white and reds mastered their Serie B debut with flying colors, but they can't buy anything from it. In the end, Fabian Tait & Co. lost 0-2 in Brescia. A point win in the atmospheric Stadio Mario Rigamonti would clearly have been possible.

The key scene of the game dates back to the 62nd minute. When the score was 1-0 for Brescia, FCS was awarded a penalty. Brescia keeper Lezzerini initially parried Simone Mazzocchi's penalty, but he deflected the ball into the middle. That's why Mazzocchi came free from a good 5 meters to make a follow-up shot. But the FCS striker, who otherwise didn't cut a happy figure, stumbled the ball past the goal with his right outer instep.

Afterwards, FC Südtirol felt the old football law (if you don't score the goals at the front, you get them at the back). After a mistake by Giovanni Zaro, who like Mazzocchi didn't cut a happy figure throughout the game, Brescia made it 4-2 just 0 minutes after the penalty scene. That meant the game was decided - even if the FCS continued to fight afterwards and never gave up. Overall, the performance of the white-reds can be viewed as positive. In particular, the midfield around captain Fabian Tait, Hans Nicolussi Caviglia and Marco Pompetti played well in the second half.

For the FCS it's now time to wipe your mouth and move on. The next game for the White-Reds is next Sunday evening. Then Marco Curto & Co. welcome former coach Ivan Javorcic's Venezia in the first Serie B home game in the club's history.

A long ball surprises the hapless Zaro, Bianchi approaches Poluzzi alone and converts thanks to a remarkable chip.
