A curious fine for FC Südtirol

FC Südtirol is considered a model club in Serie B. But even a model club can sometimes receive a fine – even if the reason is rather unusual.

As far as the rulings of the sports tribunal are concerned, FC Südtirol is one of those clubs that rarely appear there. Although the hot-tempered coaches Fabrizio Castori and Pierpaolo Bisoli have earned themselves one or two suspensions in recent years, the club itself hardly attracts any negative attention in this regard.

FC Südtirol has now been fined: As the sports court announced, the club must pay €4.000 – for a rather curious reason: According to the sports judge, the FCS players delayed the start of the match by several minutes. The official notice states verbatim: "A fine of €4.000 against FC Südtirol because the club unjustifiably delayed the start of the first half by approximately four minutes."

Further hefty fines

A curious penalty, but not an isolated incident. Hellas Verona appeared on the pitch three minutes late – and has to cough up €3.000 for it. The sports judge also handed out several other hefty fines. Ascoli has to pay €5.000 because their fans hit an assistant referee's leg with a coin. Avellino was fined €6.000 because their fans threw flares onto the pitch, forcing the match to be interrupted twice.
