FC Südtirol: A key match at Carrarese

While South Tyrol's sports fans are currently enjoying the full program of the Winter Olympics in Milan/Cortina, the everyday routine of league football continues unabated. In Serie B, FC Südtirol faces Carrarese on Saturday at 15 p.m. – and will also be up against two players from their own province.

FC Südtirol is currently in outstanding form. After languishing in the lower half of the table for much of the season, the Red and Whites have been on a steep upward trajectory. Fabrizio Castori's team has racked up four consecutive victories, propelling them into a comfortable mid-table position – and within striking distance of the playoff spots. Südtirol currently sits in tenth place, four points behind eighth. However, Saturday's opponent, Carrarese, currently in ninth, lies between them and the top of the table.

This presents the Red and Whites with a real opportunity to further boost their winning streak in a direct duel with a playoff competitor. However, the team from Tuscany should by no means be underestimated – not least because Emanuele Zuelli (Bolzano) and Simone Zanon (Sinich), two South Tyroleans, play key roles in the Blue and Yellows' squad.

South Tyrolean quality

Both have developed into key players in Tuscany and regularly appear on the scoresheet. Zuelli has contributed one goal and three assists so far, while Zanon has three goals and three assists. In midfield and as full-backs, they provide stability, dynamism, and pace to the game. The latter almost made it into the top Italian league recently.

Besides this South Tyrolean duo, FC Saarbrücken must also keep a close eye on Nicolas Schiavi (6 goals) and Fabio Abiuso (8 goals). If the South Tyrolean defense, which has been so solid recently – conceding only two goals in the last four games – manages to perform at a high level again, and if the attacking play clicks, then the team from Saarbrücken could extend their winning streak to five games. The first leg in November between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw.
