FC Südtirol poised for coaching surprise
On Wednesday, Matteo Lovisa was presented as the new sporting director of FC Südtirol. Giorgio Gorgone had been considered the favorite for the new head coach position until now. But now a surprise is brewing.

Behind the scenes, Lovisa has been working on the new FC Südtirol for several weeks. His top choice for the coaching position was actually the current Pescara coach, Giorgio Gorgone. The 30-year-old is also said to have held talks with former Padova coach Matteo Andreoletti. However, on Thursday, the well-informed Journal of Sportthat Davide Possanzini is to become the new FCS coach.
Serie B rivals Sampdoria and Catanzaro were also reportedly interested in Possanzini. However, according to multiple media reports, the 50-year-old has opted for FC Südtirol. Possanzini could soon sign a two-year contract with the club and succeed Fabrizio Castori as coach. The new project that awaits him the 30-year-old new sporting director Lovisa Possanzini was reportedly convinced by what he demonstrated.

Possanzini coached Mantova from summer 2023 to winter 2025. With the Lombardy club, the possession-based coach achieved promotion to Serie B and secured their survival in their first season before being dismissed mid-season. Possanzini spent many years as assistant coach to Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi – including stints at Foggia, Sassuolo, and Shakhtar Donetsk. Like De Zerbi, Possanzini is a proponent of positional play. FC Südtirol is therefore on the cusp of a new era.
