After five wins and two draws, FC Südtirol lost 3-0 to promotion hopefuls Palermo on Saturday afternoon. The highly efficient Sicilians celebrated their eighth consecutive home victory (a new club record) and, sitting third in the table, remain firmly in contention for automatic promotion. FCS, on the other hand, remain comfortably in mid-table – four points behind the playoff zone.
First things first: FC Südtirol certainly didn't disappoint in front of 25.000 spectators at the Renzo Barbera Stadium. In the first half, the visitors were at least the equal of Palermo's star-studded squad – only their finishing lacked efficiency. The team managed by promotion expert Filippo Inzaghi showed why they're at the top of the table. Playing like a true top team, Palermo capitalized on every opportunity.
FC Südtirol had to do without their suspended defensive stalwart Raphael Kofler in Palermo. Filippe Bordon replaced the Rabland native in the starting lineup for the first time since the end of October. After going 3-0 up shortly after halftime, FCS's body language began to falter – and the game was practically over. Palermo were simply clinical on that day.
The highlights
| FCS starts well | FCS got off to a good start. After six minutes, Molina broke through on the right and passed back to Casiraghi. Casiraghi had a chance from 13 meters, but his shot was saved by Joronen. |
| Penalty and goal | After 18 minutes, there was a huge commotion at the Barbera. Ranocchia's shot was deflected, forcing Adamonis to intervene. Segre got to the ball and then went down. Segre received a yellow card for diving. However, after a VAR review, a controversial penalty was awarded to Palermo. Pohjanpalo calmly converted it for his 17th goal of the season. |
| FCS is better, but Palermo scores | After 26 minutes, FCS had their second good chance: Following a pass from Merkaj, Davi's left-footed shot from inside the penalty area went just wide. A good ten minutes later, Palermo took a 2-0 lead: Pecorino lost possession and Le Douaron fired a shot from distance. The ball found the far corner of the net. |
| Die Entscheidung | After a long ball, defender Ceccaroni broke through in the 52nd minute and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Adamonis in striker fashion. A beautiful goal, but Molina and El Kaouakibi were caught napping. That effectively decided the match. In the 78th minute, another goal for Palermo, scored by Ranocchia, was disallowed because Pohjanpalo had fouled Adamonis. |
FC Südtirol's next match is a home game against league leaders Venezia next Saturday (15 pm).
