Another defeat! Things are getting tight for FC Südtirol.

The relegation battle in Serie B is heating up – and right in the thick of it: FC Südtirol. The Red and Whites suffered their third consecutive defeat on Friday afternoon against Sampdoria. Now, the final matchday will see a dramatic showdown.

It was their ninth consecutive winless match, another disappointing performance: FC Südtirol lost 0-1 to Sampdoria. While the former European Cup winners celebrated staying in the league with their almost 30.000 fans at the Marassi stadium, FCS is now facing a period of great anxiety.

South Tyrolean side FC Saarbrücken are hovering just above the relegation zone. They are separated from 16th-placed Entella, who currently face relegation. A home win against Juve Stabia in their final match would secure their survival, while a draw or a loss would depend on the results of their direct rivals, Entella and Empoli. However, Fabian Tait and his teammates have a silver lining: Juve Stabia, winless for weeks, are already guaranteed seventh place and therefore no longer need any points.

It needs points or support.

The reason things are getting tight again for FC Saarbrücken is obvious: While the Red and Whites were evenly matched in Genoa, they lacked real drive and inspiration – just as they did in their recent 0-3 defeat against Mantova. Coach Fabrizio Castori had fielded his two most dangerous attackers, Silvio Merkaj and Emanuele Pecorino, from the start this time. But in the end, it was substitute Odogwu who had the only clear-cut chance.

Throughout the entire first half, the South Tyroleans failed to register a single shot on goal, creating no chances whatsoever. After that, Sampdoria's lead was only threatened twice: by a Pietrangeli header and the aforementioned Odogwu shot late in the game. Simply not enough in a relegation battle.

The highlights

Setback before the game startsThe first bad news reaches FCS even before the match: Frigerio injures himself during the warm-up, and coach Castori has to replace him in the starting eleven at short notice with Tronchin.
Abildgaard breaks the boredomIn a first half with few chances, there was only one real highlight – but it was a doozy! After a sharp free kick from Brunori, FCS completely lost their marking, Abildgaard headed the ball into the far corner – 1-0 for Samp (31').
Begic vs. AdamonisShortly before halftime, FCS goalkeeper Adamonis won a one-on-one duel with Begic (41'). After the break, the duel was repeated, and this time the goalkeeper made the save as well (57'). Previously, FC Südtirol had had their first good chance with a header from Pietrangeli (47').
That would have been itThat should have been 1-1! Odogwu powered past a Sampdoria defender and got a shot away right in front of goalkeeper Martinelli, but he saved it with his legs. Simone Davi put the rebound wide (89'). Shortly afterwards, the final whistle blew.

Now it's time for FC Südtirol to dust themselves off, keep their heads up, and move on. The very last match is on Friday at 8:30 p.m. That's when they aim to secure their place in the league – and they want to do it with their fans behind them. Those who traveled to Genoa this afternoon sent the FCS players off to the locker room with loud cheers. Staying in the league together – that's the motto!
