S+Analysis & Forecasts | How good is Obermais?

The promotion of FC Obermais to Serie D is a milestone for South Tyrolean football. For the first time, a German-speaking club from Merano – the second-largest city in South Tyrol – is playing in Italy's fourth-highest league. Obermais has prepared for this – without losing its "village club" character.

For decades, Italian football clubs have written the (higher) football history of South Tyrol. Passer Meran and AC Meran are likely familiar names to older football fans in South Tyrol. Recently, two other South Tyrolean clubs, Virtus Bozen and SC St. Georgen, played in Serie D. However, neither of these clubs had the qualities that FC Obermais possesses. The Merano-based club has (almost) everything it takes to play in the fourth-highest league.
