Kick-off to the second half of the season: Obermais launches a comeback attempt

The second half of the Serie D (Group C) season kicks off on Sunday. FC Obermais aims to make a statement in their fight against relegation – but their opponents are formidable.

FC Obermais gained their first experience in Italy's fourth division against their upcoming opponent. At the beginning of September, the traditional club from Merano traveled to AC Este in Veneto, suffering a 0-3 defeat. Almost exactly four months later, the two sides meet again – a match that is only nominally a home game. Due to the cold temperatures, the game will not take place at the Lahn stadium, but instead will be played in Sinich (3:00 PM).

Although Este has more than twice as many points (26) as Obermais (12), the club, which has been in Serie D for eleven years, has struggled in its last five matches. Este has only managed one win, drawing one and suffering three defeats. A glimmer of hope for Obermais: AC Obermais dropped points against both Calvi Noale (1-3, then 16th) and Luparense (1-1, then 14th).

Obermais' last victory, however, was against none other than Muzane, who were second in the table at the time, on November 30th. But things aren't all good for the newly promoted side. In the last match of the first half of the season, FCO let victory slip away late in a crucial six-pointer against San Luigi, and a week earlier, more could have been achieved in their 0-0 draw against Conegliano. Now they are aiming to mount a comeback in the relegation battle. Currently 17th in the table, they are four points adrift of first place in the relegation zone.
