On August 23rd, there will be a first highlight for South Tyrol's football fans on the Lahn: the cup derby between Obermais and Virtus Bozen.

Derby clash to kick off the season: Virtus Bozen travels to Obermais

Even before the Serie D season really gets underway at the beginning of August, South Tyrol's football fans have a real treat in store. Obermais and Virtus Bozen will face each other in the Coppa Italia qualifying round.

The friendly match at the Drusus Stadium was the antipasto; now comes the first course, and finally, the main course in the league: Obermais and Virtus Bozen, the only two Serie D clubs from South Tyrol, will meet in the Italian Cup on August 23. This was the result of the draw on Thursday.

Both South Tyrolean clubs had hoped for this scenario, and now it has come to pass. Obermais will likely enjoy the match even more, as Merano will be playing at home on the Lahn. For South Tyrolean football fans, it's also an early highlight of the season, as there hasn't been a city derby between Bolzano and Merano in the Italian fourth division for decades.

The match will be played on Sunday, August 23rd. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 pm, but this could change. Due to the high August temperatures, the South Tyrolean Cup derby may start later. The winner of the match will advance to the first round of the Coppa Italia.
