A resounding victory: Obermais can continue to dream.

FC Obermais kept their dream of staying in Serie D alive. The Merano-based team won their decisive match against San Luigi on Sunday, thus qualifying for the relegation playoffs.

Obermais won the decisive match against San Luigi 3-1. While the team from Trieste's sixth district will be relegated to the Oberliga, FCO will face Vigasio away in the relegation playoff next Sunday. If there is no winner after 90 minutes, the game will go into extra time. A draw after 120 minutes would see Vigasio remain in the league due to their higher league position.

But Obermais is currently in excellent form and unbeaten in seven games (five draws and two wins). On Sunday, Obermais was able to field almost a full-strength squad in San Martino di Lupari (25 kilometers north of Padua): only Luca Polli (ankle injury) was unavailable. Michael Kofler played in central defense in place of the injured Marco Paulmichl (who came on as a substitute). Up front, Manuel Brusco and Mamadou Ngom started together in the first eleven.

Obermais is turning up the heat

Obermais, in their second match against San Luigi within a week, remained unfazed even by conceding an early goal in the fifth minute: Ten minutes later, Brusco calmly slotted home the equalizer after a superb through ball from Ngom. The more than 200 Obermais fans who had traveled to the game erupted in jubilant celebration.

In the 22nd minute, Ngom himself started from his own half and finished off the counter-attack to give his team a spectacular lead. Shortly before halftime, North Tyrolean Kilian Bauernfeind extended Obermais' lead to 3-1 with a curling shot from the edge of the penalty area. In the second half, the blue-and-whites skillfully defended their two-goal advantage.
