FC Obermais travelled to Treviso on Sunday as massive underdogs. In the end, South Tyrol's only Serie D club returned to Merano with three points (a 2-0 victory). An incredible story considering the vast gulf in football between the two clubs.
Here we have the proud professional club, which has won several championships in the professional ranks. Their lead over their closest rivals this season is enormous. Even after the 0-2 defeat against Obermais, Treviso still sits ten points ahead of Clodiense. Clodiense is one of the few amateur clubs in the league, where the players still wash their own clothes and arrive at training at 19 p.m. after work. Nevertheless, Flavio Toccoli's team not only challenged the clear favorites on Sunday, but actually brought them down. For Treviso – coached by long-time Cittadella manager Edoardo Gorini – it was only their fourth defeat of the season. For FCO, however, it was a historic victory: the Merano-based team had never before won an away game in Serie D.
Ngom and Turini meet
Mamadou Ngom (37th minute) and substitute Stefan Turini (81st minute) scored the goals for Obermais in front of around 1.500 spectators. Obermais once again fielded eight South Tyroleans in their starting eleven. Young Simon Larcher from Ritten (born in 2008) was given the nod in the attacking trio. The entire defense, including goalkeeper Luca Tenderini, consisted of South Tyroleans.Alex Demetz, left-back for Obermais, kept a clean sheet alongside his defensive colleagues.
Winter signing Ngom showcased his excellent form in attack, scoring in his third consecutive match. For Turini, a product of the Obermais youth academy, it was his first Serie D goal. The 18-year-old had been sidelined with an injury since November 23rd and capped his comeback with a goal.Because Calvi Noale also celebrated a victory, Obermais remains in 16th place, level on points. However, the relegation battle has become even tighter. The gap to a direct relegation spot is eight points. The deficit to 12th place, which would guarantee automatic survival, is seven points. Vigasio, currently in the first relegation playoff spot, is only three points ahead.
