Victory despite being outnumbered: Obermais shows fighting spirit

FC Obermais celebrated a hugely important home victory on Sunday. The Serie D club from the Merano district showed incredible fighting spirit against Bassano, turning the game around despite being down to ten men.

It was the 69th minute when the young Unterland player Samuel Villgrattner received his second yellow card. As the midfielder left the field, Toccoli was devising a battle plan on the sidelines. With one man less on the pitch, the primary objective was to see out the 1-1 draw – as the score stood at that point.

A point against the tenth-placed team while playing with ten men would have been a success for Obermais. But then things got even better. Raphael Unterthurner headed FCO into the net in the 81st minute to secure a 2-1 home victory. It was the 19-year-old from Riffian's first goal of the season and also his first ever for Obermais.

Toccoli had to do without several key players in the home game against Bassano. The absence of both strikers was particularly painful. Manuel Brusco and Mamadou Ngom were unfit, as were Armand Srmcka, Alex Demetz, Oliver Rohrer, and Stefan Turini. As a result, Luca Polli moved into the starting lineup – for the first time in five matches.

After Bassano striker Giulio Fasano gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at halftime, Obermais turned the game around after the break. Edoardo Ghiotti scored his third Serie D goal after a pass from Bauernfeind, before Unterthurner finally broke the deadlock. Next week, the South Tyroleans travel to the Adriatic coast to face Brian Lignano (7th).
