Strange ban for Lionel Messi

The rules also apply to football superstar Lionel Messi in the American league MLS.

The Argentine was suspended for one game by the league after he chose not to participate in the All-Star Game in Austin on Wednesday. The same applies to Jordi Alba, his Inter Miami teammate. Messi and Alba were selected by fans and the media for the MLS roster for the match against the Mexican Liga MX team.

Both players declined to participate without providing a medical explanation. Accordingly, they were suspended for Saturday's game against Cincinnati. MLS CEO Don Garber called it a "difficult decision," while Miami coach Javier Mascherano explained his duo's absence on Friday with their busy schedule.

Messi was tired, said his fellow Argentine. The 38-year-old Messi has scored 17 goals in 18 league games this season. He also played with Inter in the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the Club World Cup.
