Maradona's "Hand of God" goal: Ball auctioned for millions

The ball used by Diego Maradona for his legendary goals at the 1986 FIFA World Cup has been auctioned for several million.

Argentine football legend scored the legendary "Hand of God" goal and a "Goal of the Century" using the Adidas Azteca ball – now the ball has fetched 3,35 million US dollars (around 2,87 million euros), as announced on the Dallas-based auction house Heritage Auctions on its website.

"Simply put, it's the most famous ball in the history of the world's most popular sport," the auction house had advertised before the auction. In fact, the auctioneers had even anticipated bids of up to 10 million US dollars (approximately 8,8 million euros). The starting bid was 2,5 million US dollars (2,2 million euros). The name of the new owner has not yet been released.

Goals for football history

In Argentina's quarter-final against England, Maradona scored the opening goal in the 51st minute, guiding the ball over English goalkeeper Peter Shilton with his hand. Four minutes later, he embarked on an incredible solo run from his own half, which he finished off to make it 2-0. The previous tie between Argentina and England (2-1) was politically charged due to the Falklands War four years earlier.

The ball had been in the possession of Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser for several decades. He officiated the match on June 22nd, 40 years ago, at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. He is also said to have confirmed its authenticity, stating that no other ball was used in the game. The ball was auctioned in London in 2022 for the equivalent of €2,3 million.
