Messi celebrates MLS record – fans storm the pitch

Football superstar Lionel Messi has set a new milestone in North America's Major League Soccer. The Argentinian World Cup winner shone in Inter Miami's 4-2 (1-0) victory over Toronto FC, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

This means Messi has now been directly involved in 100 goals in his first 64 MLS games – no other footballer has achieved this in so few matches. The previous record was held by Italian Sebastian Giovinco with 95 games.

In Toronto, the now 38-year-old Messi was in top form. Shortly before the end of the first half, he gave Rodrigo de Paul a free kick, which de Paul then converted on the rebound to give his team the lead (44'). After the break, Messi first set up goals for Luis Suárez (56') and Sergio Reguilón (73'), before scoring himself after a one-two with de Paul (76').

Less pleasant for the multiple-time World Player of the Year: Shortly before the end of the match, several fans tried to get onto the pitch to take selfies with Messi. Security had to intervene. In the Eastern Conference, Miami is in third place behind Nashville SC and the New England Revolution.

Top match ends in a draw

The top Western Conference game between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Vancouver Whitecaps ended 1-1 (1-0). San Jose thus continues to lead the Western Conference standings ahead of Vancouver.
