Millions paid for a Pelé jersey

The 1958 World Cup jersey of Brazilian football legend Pelé has changed hands for several million euros.

As the renowned auction house Sotheby's announced, the blue jersey with the yellow number 10 was auctioned for $4,88 million (approximately €4,3 million). Only Diego Maradona's football jersey, which sold for over €8,1 million, was previously more expensive; it was the jersey he wore during Argentina's 2-1 victory against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final.

Thanks in part to Pelé's brace in the 1958 final against Sweden (5-2), the Seleção celebrated their first of five World Cup titles. According to Sotheby's, he gave his jersey to his then-teammate Dida, who had previously worn the number 10. Reportedly, in 1993 it passed from Dida's family to a museum in honor of Pelé's teammate.

It was first publicly auctioned at Christie's in 2004, but was not presented to the public again for the following two decades. Pelé died at the end of 2022 at the age of 82.
