At the age of 39: Croatian former international player dead

Great sadness in Croatian football: former national player Nikola Pokrivac has died at the age of only 39.

Pokrivac died in a car accident on Friday evening, according to the Croatian Football Association (HNS). According to media reports, the Croatian was returning from training with teammates when the serious traffic accident occurred in Karlovac, about 45 minutes southwest of Zagreb.

Pokrivac earned 15 caps for Croatia. In 2008, he participated with his home country at the European Championships in Switzerland and Austria. In addition to Salzburg (2009 to 2011), the defensive midfielder played for Dinamo Zagreb and AS Monaco, among others. According to the Croatian Football Association, Pokrivac ended his professional career in 2015 due to a serious illness. He continued to play for several clubs in lower leagues.
