Musiala defends Donnarumma: “Nobody is to blame”

German national football player Jamal Musiala has spoken out after his serious injury at the Club World Cup.

"I wanted to say that no one is to blame. Situations like this happen," the 22-year-old said in a video post on his social media channels, thanking everyone for their support and encouragement: "It's nice to see the football world come together in times like these."

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma seriously injured Musiala in a fateful challenge during Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain's quarter-final victory. The Bayern Munich player suffered a broken fibula and a dislocated ankle. Musiala has since undergone surgery on his left leg after returning from the USA and will be out for months.

Donnarumma in contact with Musiala

PSG coach Luis Enrique had previously reported personal contact between his goalkeeper Donnarumma and the Bayern player. At the same time, the Spaniard defended Donnarumma against accusations from the Munich team before the semi-final against Real Madrid.

"Anyone who knows Gianluigi knows he's a great guy," Enrique said Tuesday evening (local time) in East Rutherford. The 26-year-old is a professional who never wants to hurt an opponent.

"I am very shocked by what happened. It was certainly not my intention to injure Musiala," Italy goalkeeper Donnarumma told the Journal of Sport said.

Luis Enrique said in the press conference before the Real Madrid match this evening (21 p.m. CEST) at MetLife Stadium near New York that everyone at PSG wished Musiala "a speedy recovery." He added that football is also a sport in which injuries occur repeatedly. That's part of being a professional.

No Enrique reply to Neuer's accusations

Luis Enrique declined to comment on Bayern captain Manuel Neuer's surprisingly harsh criticism of his Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper colleague Donnarumma. "I don't want to judge what others have said," said the 55-year-old Spaniard. Neuer, 39, had criticized Donnarumma. "It was a situation where you don't necessarily have to go in like that. You simply accept the risk of injuring your opponent or teammate." He also added that Donnarumma didn't immediately go for Musiala during the game.
