Prominent guests: All training camps in South Tyrol

While the European Football Championship is in full swing, many professional clubs have resumed preparations for the new season. For decades, South Tyrol has been and remains a highly sought-after training ground - and not just because the Italian women's national team is currently in Bruneck and the U19 selection of the "Azzurri" is returning to Eppan tomorrow after an initial week of training in the Rungg sports zone to get the final touches for the European Championship in Northern Ireland.

It is a tradition that the Bavarian third division team Unterhaching comes to Schlanders to prepare for the season. It is also a tradition that the club headed by President Manni Schwabl starts the South Tyrolean summer training camp. The team, which until a year ago was coached by Sandro Wagner - he is now assistant coach of the German national football team - has been in Schlanders since the beginning of the week and is preparing there until Sunday, July 7th for the upcoming third division season, which begins on August 2nd.

Two more German third division teams are coming to South Tyrol, namely 2. FC Ingolstadt (for the first time to Latsch) and Arminia Bielefeld, which is moving to Kiens like last year.

As in the recent past, 1. FC Kaiserslautern will be stopping off in Mals. The club, which sensationally reached the DFB Cup final just a month ago and only narrowly lost to the overwhelming favorites Bayer Leverkusen (0:1), is expected in the Upper Vinschgau on Saturday, July 6th.

German professional football is also represented in South Tyrol by two Bundesliga teams: the sensational Heidenheim team is stopping off in Natz as it did last year and is coming to the high plateau today, where the team of cult coach Frank Schmidt will stay until July 2th. On Saturday, July 10th (6:15.30 p.m.) there will be a friendly match against a regional Natz-Schabs selection. No further friendly matches are planned.

VfL Bochum, on the other hand, will not be coming to Gais until the end of the month. The team, led by new head coach Peter Zeidler, will move into the training camp in Gais on July 28 (until August 4). Bochum caused a huge stir in the relegation match against Fortuna Düsseldorf: they lost the first leg 0-3 in front of their own fans, but won 3-0 away before gaining the upper hand in the penalty shootout.

And the Italian professional clubs? Serie A is represented by Champions League participant Bologna. The sensational 2023/24 team (5th place) will come to Vals Jochtal from July 22 to August 3. It remains to be seen whether top striker Joshua Zirkzee, who is being considered by many top clubs, will also be part of the team.

In addition to FC Südtirol, which as usual is doing its preseason training in the Ridnauntal, only one other Serie B club, Spezia, is coming to South Tyrol. They will train for two weeks in the Val Gardena.

After 7 years, Sassuolo has broken down its training camps in Sterzing and Ridnaun. The club from Emilia Romagna was relegated to Serie B last spring after 11 years in Serie A. This year, the team of new coach Fabio Grosso will train in Ronzone, just a few kilometers "behind" the Mendel Pass, starting on July 9th.
