PSG coach Enrique and the often short-lived glory: “Look at Pep”

Despite all the praise for his current work and outstanding success with Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Enrique does not forget how fleeting fame can be in professional football.

"Look at Pep (Guardiola). Manchester City was the best team in recent years. And then they lost a few games this season," said the 55-year-old Spaniard shortly before the Club World Cup final against Chelsea.

His compatriot Guardiola remained titleless with City this season. At the Club World Cup, the star-studded ensemble, led by striker Erling Haaland, was surprisingly eliminated in the round of 16 by Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia. "In the end, everything depends on the results. You only get all the praise as a coach if you win," said Enrique.

He himself could crown a historic season with the French champions on Sunday (21.00 p.m. CEST) by becoming Club World Champion with PSG six weeks after the Champions League triumph in Munich with a 5-0 win against Inter at the MetLife Stadium in New York, New Jersey.

"This means a lot to me. Making history was my goal from the very beginning when I came to Paris. We want to win more trophies," Enrique said at the press conference in the final stadium. Asked whether he wasn't PSG's true star, he replied: "I'm not a star! I wasn't a star as a player! And I'm not a star as a coach!" But he loves his job. And he also recalled times when he was harshly criticized in front of the world press.
