South Tyrol's footballers on the rise

Just a few years ago, South Tyrolean professional footballers were few and far between. Now, there are almost two dozen players earning their living from football outside the province. Most of them are based in Italy—though not all of them.

Gone are the days when Manuel Scavone or Simon Laner had to almost single-handedly carry the South Tyrolean flag in professional football. Nowadays, numerous professionals from South Tyrol are active in football and are gradually conquering the higher leagues. As of today, 17 South Tyroleans – excluding FCS pros – earn their money at professional clubs in the following leagues: Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, the Austrian 2. Bundesliga, and the German 3. Bundesliga.
