Watzke gives Stöger hope: “Great relationship of trust”

Dortmund (SID) Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke of the Bundesliga soccer club Borussia Dortmund can certainly imagine working with coach Peter Stöger beyond the season. "We have a great relationship of trust with Peter Stöger. In due course we will have appropriate discussions and announce decisions," Watzke told Sport Bild. Stöger, whose contract expires in the summer, is already involved in squad planning for the coming season. The Austrian took over BVB in December and has since led the DFB Cup winners from eighth to third place in the table. "He hasn't lost a game yet. If he continues to lose none, we would be stupid if we didn't continue with it," Watzke had already said on Sky Talk "Wontorra" on Sunday. Stöger was happy about the praise. "Of course it's nice to hear when those in charge aren't dissatisfied with my work. But that doesn't change anything for me. We want to get back into the Champions League, that's what I'm concentrating on," said the 51-year-old. Should Stöger lead BVB into the Champions League, he himself would have provided the best arguments for a contract extension. Julian Nagelsmann has been considered the hottest coaching candidate for the coming season in recent weeks. However, Nagelsmann has a contract with 1899 Hoffenheim until 2021. Due to an exit clause, the coach could leave TSG in the summer of 2019.
