At 67: Golf idol Langer narrowly misses the cut

Germany's golf icon Bernhard Langer missed the cut in his last participation in the Masters in Augusta.

The 67-year-old ended up needing one shot too many and had to pack up after rounds of 74 and 73. "I played really well today and just had a terrible ending, which knocked me out. But I didn't know if I was walking down hole 18 for the last time or if I'd still be here tomorrow," Langer told US broadcaster ESPN.

Until the 15th hole, the chances were good that Langer would be able to compete in the two decisive rounds. But the veteran and winner of 1985 and 1993 hit his ball into the water on the par 5 with his third shot. In the end, he needed seven strokes on the 15th hole.

Langer also missed the final hole. His decisive putt for par missed the hole by a whisker. This left Langer three strokes over par after two days, with all players making the cut within two strokes over par at most – including Stephan Jäger.

Masters farewell after 40 years

Langer had previously announced that this would be his final appearance at the major tournament in the US state of Georgia. With his first Masters triumph 40 years ago, the Swabian, who had lived in the US for a long time, had suddenly thrust golf into the spotlight in Germany. In 1993, he once again secured the legendary green jacket for the winner. In the future, Langer plans to concentrate exclusively on tournaments on the US Senior Tour.

Justin Rose of England remains in the lead heading into the weekend. After his strong opening round of 65, he followed up with a round of 71 on Friday. He is now eight under par, one stroke ahead of Bryson DeChambeau of the USA. Rory McIlroy played the best round of the day and improved to shared third place thanks to a shot of just 66 on the second day. Like Corey Conners, he is six under par and two strokes behind Rose.
