Taekwondo South Tyrol impresses at Austrian Open

At the Austrian Open 2026 in Innsbruck, one of the largest international Taekwondo tournaments in Europe, Taekwondo Südtirol Eurotherm was represented by three athletes and was able to draw attention to itself with strong performances.

The world ranking tournament had around 1.200 participants from over 50 nations and four continents, thus setting the highest sporting standards.


The 21-year-old presented himself particularly successfully. Alexander Oberhofer, who secured the bronze medal. Oberhofer, who was seeded fifth in this tournament, once again confirmed his place among Europe's elite. Following his gold medal win at the Dracula Open, this is his next international success.

In the quarterfinals, Oberhofer prevailed in a thrilling match, defeating a Croatian athlete 2-1. In the semifinals, he was finally stopped by the top Italian athlete Simone Alessio – world champion and bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics – losing 0-2. Along with valuable world ranking points, Oberhofer thus brought another bronze medal back to South Tyrol.

He also gave a very promising performance. Maya Wenin, who gained valuable international experience at her first world ranking tournament in the adult category. She narrowly lost 1:2 to the number 7 seeded athlete from France. The score was tied after regulation time, but the decision ultimately went in favor of the Frenchwoman due to a higher technical score awarded by the computer system.
