Kiens with light and shadow

Kiens is having a fantastic season in the women's A-League this year. Last week, the Puster Valley team had one win and one loss: First, they defeated Burggräfler 5-1 on Wednesday, but then suffered a 1-5 defeat against league leaders Fugger Sterzing on Saturday.

It's already been a very strong season for Kiens. While it was clear they wouldn't be involved in the relegation battle, the fact that they're among the contenders for the championship title is fantastic.

Last week, they first fended off a competitor for a top spot. Against the Burggräfler team, Kiens started with a lost match by Martha Lechner, who was defeated by Burggräfler's Judith Gasser 489:503 pins (2:2 in sets). But the Puster Valley women didn't give up and responded with three victories.

First, Sarah Hirber narrowly defeated Burggräfler's Mirjam Kofler 530:528, but led 3:1 in sets. Then, Sandra Santer delivered the day's best performance against Burggräfler's Kristina Pöhl. The Kiens player won convincingly 568:536, taking three sets in the process. Finally, Kiens captain Sonja Fischer also won her match against Burggräfler's Helene Gasser. Fischer scored 544 pins and won three sets, while Gasser managed 528 pins and won one set. This gave Kiens a 3:1 lead after the matches.

Kiens also came out on top in the overall result, albeit by a narrow margin. Their total pinfall of 2131:2095 resulted in a final score of 5:1 for the home team. Although they suffered a setback four days later against league leaders Fugger Sterzing, they remain on course for a top-three finish.

The Burggrafen are creeping closer The Burggrafen team still has a chance to finish in the top five of the men's A1 league. In their home match against Kurtatsch, currently in fifth place, Michael Waldner and his teammates managed a 4-4 draw. The hosts from the Burggrafenamt region lost several matches by the narrowest of margins; otherwise, they might even have secured the victory.

In the first match, Waldner took an early lead, defeating Kurtatsch's Aaron Peer Pratzer 612:551 (3:1 in sets). However, Michael Haller, Joe Sieder, Ivan Costadedoi, and Markus Rottensteiner then lost their matches in succession, allowing Kurtatsch to take a 4:1 lead. Haller was defeated by Alexander Schweiggl 568:531 (2:2 in sets). Sieder lost to Andreas Dalvai 596:607 (1,5:2,5 in sets). Costadedoi lost to Tobias Gruber 551:574 (1:3 in sets). Rottensteiner's match was very close, with him losing to Ivan Mayr 568:571 (1,5:2,5 in sets).

But then Manfred Oberhofer defeated his Kurtatsch opponent Norbert Schgraffer 592:531 pins (3:1 in sets). This margin saved the Burggrafen team from losing, as the hosts not only reduced their deficit but also finished ahead 3450:3402 pins. This gave them the final two match points, securing the 4:4 draw.

Because Kurtatsch was held up, the race for third place has become even more exciting. This position will likely be contested between Algund and Naturns, who both have 19 points, but Algund has played one game less.
