Piccolruaz triumphs at the Italian Cup

The second stage of the Italian Cup in Boulder took place at the Deva Wall climbing center in Ferrara. After an exciting qualification, the 24 classified men and women delivered a semi-final with excellent technical and athletic performances. In the final, Olympian Michael Piccolruaz confirmed himself as a top athlete and landed in first place with 2 tops and 3 zones. Second place was Matteo Baschieri with a top and 4 zones and third place was Pietro Biagini. Johannes Egger from AVS Bruneck made it to the semi-finals, but was no longer included in the final of the top six. Piccolruaz experienced some ups and downs last year until he finally won the Italian Championships in Boulder in the summer of 2023. Regarding his victory, he said: “In this final I was completely mentally focused again. I work a lot on the technical bouldering movements and can adapt well to this discipline.” Excellent performances with many tops were seen in the women's final. Giulia Medici won with 4 tops and 4 zones, followed by Beatrice Anna Colli (3 tops and 3 zones) and Stella Giacani with 2 tops and 3 zones. The 17-year-old Leonie Hofer from AVS Passeier also showed a good performance. She came in 5th place and performed well in the final with 2 tops and 3 zones. Matilda Liu Moar (AVS Brixen) achieved her best result to date in the Italian Cup and narrowly missed out on making it to the final with seventh place. For both men and women, the course setters under the direction of Riccardo Caprasecca have created some really exciting courses with a lot of variety and a considerable level of difficulty. In both the semi-finals and the final, technical ability and the ability to get to the top with as few attempts as possible were decisive for placement.
