Start of the 10th season of the Youth Grand Prix

The Youth Grand Prix is a successful model for promoting young talent in the South Tyrolean regional association. The winner is not whoever runs the fastest or jumps the furthest in one discipline, but whoever is strongest in three disciplines, e.g. 80 or 300 m running, high or long jump and shot put. Points are awarded per discipline based on a national points table. What matters is not the placement, but the performance. This concept has also brought South Tyrol's young talent top results at national level in recent years. In each of the last four years, an overall GP winner has also won a medal (Seppi) or even a title (Kastl, Albertoni) at the Italian Youth Championships. At the start of the Grand Prix in Brixen on Saturday, athletes from the U16, U14 and U12 age groups took part. Almost twice as many girls as boys took part in the competitions.

In the U16 girls, Sandra Ayu Dewi from SG Eisacktal won the duel with Martina Gatscher (SV Lana). Dewi won the shot put thanks to a superior best distance of 10.94 m (836 points). Julia Calliari (LC Bozen) provided the best individual performance. The U16 Italian champion ran over 80 m in 10.17 seconds (945 points) to take first place on the Italian annual best list. Markus Puff dominated the U16 boys. Puff achieved the best result in the long jump with 6,15 m (812 points), also won the shot put and was only beaten by Luca Moranduzzo over 80 m. The GP winners in the U14 age group are Petra Tappeiner (LAC Vinschgau) and Andreas Fuchsberger (SV Lana). There is still no GP classification for under-12s. The most successful club was SV Lana with two GP winners, two more athletes on the podium and in the U16 girls even five athletes in the top ten.

Supporting competitions for the general class as well as for juniors and U18 athletes also took place in Brixen. Pierluigi Putzu (Athletic Cub '96) achieved the outstanding result with 7,13 m in the long jump. U16 Italian vice-champion Andreas Zagler (LC Bozen) threw the 700 g javelin at 18 m at his premiere in the U51,50 age group.
