Boston Marathon becomes a family affair

Thirteen years after his brother, John Korir triumphed at the Boston Marathon. It was a Kenyan celebration at the highly-prized race in the USA.

The 28-year-old broke away from the other competitors with an attack just ten kilometers from the finish and won in 2:04.45 hours.

His brother Wesley Korir, who had won in 2012, was waiting for him at the finish line. The two are now the first pair of brothers on the winners list. John Korir had already triumphed at the Chicago Marathon last October.

New record for women

31-year-old Kenyan Sharon Lokedi smashed the course record in the 129th edition of the classic race with a time of 2:17:22. Last year's runner-up finished more than two and a half minutes under the eleven-year-old mark set by Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba (2:19:59). Lokedi also prevented fellow countrywoman Hellen Obiri from winning Boston for the third time in a row, overtaking her with just over a kilometer to go. Obiri finished second, 19 seconds behind.

The victory is endowed with 150.000 dollars (132.000 euros) in prize money, and Lokedi also receives an additional 50.000 dollars for the course record.
