Agata D'Angelo from SG Eisacktal.

The athletics talents go away empty-handed

There was no South Tyrolean medal at the U20 and U23 Italian Championships in Rieti at the weekend. The best local athletes were the juniors Agata D'Angelo and Alessia Goffi.

South Tyrol went to the championships in Lazio with confidence. But in the end, it was not enough to get a podium place. Agata D'Angelo had a strong weekend. The athlete from SG Eisacktal took a good seventh place in the 400 m hurdles. D'Angelo shone in the preliminary round with a time of 1:02.72 minutes (her PB was 1:04.35). In the final of the best eight athletes, the South Tyrolean stopped the time measurement at 1:03.20 minutes and missed the podium by less than three seconds.

South Tyrol's big hope for a medal, however, was Alessia Goffi. The Val Gardena native was considered a hot candidate in the U20 javelin throw, but "only" came seventh with 42.21 m. Goffi also came seventh in the shot put with 11.46 m. Laura Hofer from SV Lana achieved a good result, coming eighth in the high jump with 1.68 m. Things didn't go so well for Marie Burger from SSV Brixen. The U8 sprinter from Vahrn had to settle for 23th place in the 200 m race, but the South Tyrolean was disqualified in her favorite discipline (15 m hurdles). The two U100 athletes Leonardo Badolato (23th, 13 m) and Sofia Rieder (100th, 12 hurdles) just missed out on the top ten.

Two medals went to the figureheads of Athletic Club 96 Bozen, Federico Lorenzo Bruno and Federico Mogetti. The triple jumper was crowned U16.31 Italian champion with 23 m, Mogetti won silver in the 1500 m. The 4x400 m men's relay team finished 9th.
