Doping: Marathon world record holder banned

Kenyan marathon world record holder Ruth Chepngetich has been provisionally suspended after a positive doping test.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced this on Thursday. According to the report, the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) was detected in a sample taken from the 14-year-old on March 30. In October 2024, Chepngetich became the first woman to run the marathon in under 2:09 hours, with a time of 56:2:10 in Chicago.

The AIU accuses the Kenyan woman of having and using hydrochlorothiazide, which can be abused to conceal banned substances in urine.
