European Championship in Rome: Azzurre's double victory in walking

The European Athletics Championships started in Rome on Friday. As soon as the first medal decision was made, two local athletes caused the fans in the Italian capital to freak out.

This World Athletics Championships started like a fairy tale for the Azzurre. An Italian woman immediately won gold at the first medal ceremony. After walking 20 kilometers, Antonella Palmisano crossed the finish line in the Eternal City in 1.28,09:1.28,37 hours and celebrated her European championship title. As if that wasn't enough, seconds later Valentina Trapletti (XNUMX) ensured a double success for the host country.

While the Italian fans were rejoicing, there was a strange mishap in the fight for bronze: the Ukrainian Ljudmila Oljanowska (1.28,48) caught Laura García-Caro, who was already wrapped in a Spanish flag, in the last meters Bronze away with a final spurt.

A little later, the mixed relay team secured Italy's second silver medal in the 4x400 meters. Luca Sito, Anna Polinari, Edoardo Scotti and Alice Mangione only had to admit defeat to Ireland. The Netherlands took bronze.

Battocletti also wins

As well as the first day at the European Championships began, it ended just as well. In the last competition on Friday, Nadia Battocletti secured the gold medal in the 5000 meters ahead of Norway's Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal and Marta Garcia from Spain. This meant that after the first day, Italy already had two gold and two silver medals in the medal table.
