Ingebrigtsen improves world record over 2000 meters

Running ace Jakob Ingebrigtsen has improved the 24-year-old world record over the rarely run 2000 meter distance.

The 5000 meter world champion from Budapest stayed below Hicham El Guerrouj's previous record in 4:43,13 minutes at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels on Friday. Morocco's running idol covered the two kilometers on September 7, 1999 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium in 4:44,79 minutes.

At the last World Athletics Championships in Hungary, 1500-meter Olympic champion Ingebrigtsen surprisingly missed out on his first World Championship title on his special route. The Norwegian, who will soon be 23 years old, compensated for this with the World Championship title over 5000 meters, as he did last year.
